General Description
Koni Reds are high-quality, twin-tube low-pressure shocks that perform very well on Vanagons. They come with a limited lifetime warranty. The twin-tube design delivers a nice ride on pavement with good stability and cornering and they do a great job of soaking up bumps on dirt roads.
Adjustable Rebound Damping
In addition to being a high-quality shock, the Koni Reds come with adjustable rebound damping. This is of particular benefit to Vanagon drivers.
If you have larger wheels/tires or stiffer than stock springs, you can dial the rebound in to meet the exact demands of your van. You can't do that with any other off-the-shelf Vanagon shock. In addition, the front end on Vanagons can be bouncy, and the adjustable rebound allows you to dial the bounce away to your personal satisfaction.
The Importance of Tires & Tire Pressure
Tires are a de facto part of the suspension system. It's critical that your tires have the proper load rating and sidewall strength or handling, stability and suspension performance will suffer. Air pressure is also critical. It's is very strongly advised that you test different air pressures to find what performs best.
On Vanagons, the rear tires should have 5 to 10 psi more pressure than the front. 43 psi front and 53 rear is a good starting place for testing (assuming your tires max pressure allow it).
Leveling Your Van
Using shims to level your van front-to-rear and left-to-right will improve the feel and handling of your van and is highly recommended. |
