Hi everyone,

I can buy a 1986 vw Syncro, not the westfalia/camper. It appears to be in good running shape - I will take it to 2 independent mechanics for a complete inspection. Can any one please recommend a good mechanic in Washington?

I am interested in building myself a 4wd/awd camper van & am wondering if I should invest in the above syncro or buy a AWD mini-van, e.g,, Ford Aerostar?

A friend who has owned a sycro westie is advising me against it - saying they are a maintenance nightmare.

I am wondering what would be more effective in the long run? From a cost / reliability perspective. However, I admit I do like the syncros

My intent is to use the vehicle to travel North America for climbing/skiing trips - I work 1 year & then have a 3 month break.

I want a reliable/durable vehicle.

Based on everyone's experiences what would you suggest?

Thank you for your advice & help - I greatly appreciate it.

Best wishes to all.
